Stacking
Taking multiple supplements is nothing new. Adelle Davis was writing extensively about vitamins and minerals in Let’s Eat Right to Keep Fit in the 1950s, Linus Pauling wrote about high-dose vitamin C in the 1970s, and The Vitamin Bible helped popularize a broader supplement culture in the 1980s.
What has changed is the language, and of course, social media. Once more associated with fitness and bodybuilding, supplement “stacks” are now also prominent in biohacking and increasingly visible across online wellness culture.
But a longer stack is not necessarily a better one. The more supplements you add, the more difficult it becomes to know what is helping, what is unnecessary, and what may be causing side effects or interacting with something else you take. Take one supplement for a specific reason and it may be relatively easy to judge whether it is doing what you hoped. Take seven, eight, nine, or ten and that becomes much harder. You may sleep better, have more energy, or simply feel better, but what changed? Was it one supplement, a combination of them, or something unrelated?
The Psychology of the Stack
A stack can make health feel surprisingly organized. Vitamin D for your bones. CoQ10 for your heart. B12 for energy. Creatine for your muscles. Perhaps magnesium for sleep. One by one, it can begin to feel as though you are ticking off the different parts of your health.
There is something reassuring about that. Taking a supplement is tangible. You have bought it, taken it and done something that feels beneficial for your health. Add another supplement for another health concern and it can feel as though you have covered another base.
But the body does not work as a collection of separate boxes. Nutrients and other compounds are absorbed, metabolized, and used through interconnected systems. Adding more supplements does not necessarily mean adding more benefit, and at some point it can become harder to know what is helping, what is doing nothing, and what may be making you feel worse.
When Stacking Gets Complicated
There is a difference between taking a few familiar vitamins and minerals and building a stack that includes herbs, concentrated extracts and supplements such as berberine, ashwagandha, chromium or NAD+ precursors. At that point, things become more complicated.
These compounds do not simply head toward the part of the body written on the bottle. They have to be absorbed, transported, metabolized and eventually eliminated, alongside everything else you eat, take and absorb.
That matters because supplements can interact. Some may compete for absorption, some can affect how medications are metabolized, and others may have overlapping effects. You can also unknowingly take the same nutrient from several different products, turning what looks like a carefully constructed stack into a much higher dose than intended.
Red yeast rice is a good example of how quickly the idea of a “natural” supplement can become more complicated. It is commonly taken for cholesterol, yet some red yeast rice products contain monacolin K, a compound chemically identical to the prescription statin lovastatin. One study of 28 commercially available products found more than a 60-fold difference in the amount of monacolin K they contained. Something sold as a supplement can therefore have drug-like effects and interactions.
The more ingredients you add, the more variables you introduce. What began as a carefully considered supplement routine can quickly become crowded. At some point, the question is no longer whether each supplement has a potential benefit, but whether you really know what the entire stack is doing together.

A More Grounded Way to Supplement
If you are taking several supplements, it may be more useful to think about them individually rather than as a stack. What is each one there to do? Is there a clear reason for taking it, and does that reason still make sense?
The difficulty with a growing stack is that it can become almost impossible to identify the source of a problem. Headaches, digestive changes, changes in sleep, mood, skin or energy may have many causes, but when several supplements are introduced together, the picture becomes even less clear. Was it one product, the dose, an interaction, a duplicated ingredient or something unrelated? And the way one supplement affects you may be very different from the way it affects someone else.
Introducing them gradually gives you more clarity. You might start with one or two, make a simple note of how you feel, and add others later rather than introducing everything at once.
Perhaps that is where the idea of a foundation becomes more useful than the idea of a stack. Supplements can have an important place, but complexity does not necessarily create better health. Sometimes it simply makes it harder to know what your body is responding to.
Bottom Line
Supplement stacking may have a new name, but the idea itself is not new. What has changed is how quickly trends spread, how many products are marketed for increasingly specific goals, and how easy it is to build a routine around what everyone else appears to be taking. At the far end of that spectrum are highly engineered biohacking routines such as Bryan Johnson’s, where dozens of supplements have been taken as part of a daily protocol, raising questions around gastrointestinal tolerance and the practical limits of taking more.
Your biochemistry is individual. A supplement that suits one person may not suit another, and the more you introduce at once, the harder it becomes to know what your body is responding to. If you do choose to stack, introduce supplements gradually, pay attention to how you feel, and choose good-quality products from reputable sources.
Supplements can be a great addition to your health, but the value of a stack is not in how much it contains. It is in knowing what belongs there, what your body actually needs, and what may simply be there because everyone else is taking it.
